Catherine Wang is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Accounting program, from which she expects to graduate this coming May. Originally from Harbin, China, she was inspired to attend Isenberg after her uncle told her about his experience as an Isenberg student.

How did you choose Isenberg and UMass Amherst?

Hearing how Isenberg helped my uncle gain professional knowledge and confidence motivated me to follow in his footsteps. And I wanted to study in a place that combines strong academics with opportunities to connect with people from different backgrounds, and Isenberg has really provided that environment.

What made you choose to continue your education with an MS in Accounting?

During my undergraduate studies, I explored different paths, such as marketing and international business, before realizing that accounting was what I really liked. Isenberg’s MS in Accounting program has a strong academic reputation, which gives me the confidence and preparation I need for the CPA exam and my future career.

How do you see the MS in Accounting degree complementing your skill set and setting you up for success post-graduation?

The program offers a diverse range of courses that have helped me strengthen my professional skills and deepen my understanding of financial and accounting principles. It has also really helped me develop my skill set through analyzing real-world projects and collaborating with teammates, experiences that I know will benefit me in my future career.

What have been your favorite classes and experiences at Isenberg so far?

I’ve enjoyed all my classes so far. Two of my favorites are Tax & Business Decisions and Financial Statement Analysis & Valuation. I spent a lot of time studying for both, but in the end, they gave me a clear picture of tax strategy and financial decision-making.

Have you had any jobs or internships during your undergraduate or graduate education?

I worked at LGA, LLP as a tax co-op during the spring of 2023. I really enjoyed the supportive culture and working environment. Because of that, I returned as a staff auditor the following year. I’ve learned and grown so much throughout that experience. I am currently working as a student receptionist in the accounting department, which has been a great opportunity to connect with students and faculty.

What are you planning after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to take the CPA exams and begin my career in public accounting. I hope to continue developing my skills in auditing.

If you could go back and give your first-year self some advice, what would you tell them?

I would tell myself not to hide or be afraid, just go out and explore all the opportunities and activities on campus. I wish I had gotten involved more in the community and taken advantage of everything the school has to offer.

Do you have a mentor from the Isenberg community who has helped shape your experience?

All the professors I’ve met have been very knowledgeable and supportive. I always feel comfortable approaching them with any questions. Professor Bradley Bennett and Professor Jennifer Roy have especially shared thoughtful advice that helped me grow and motivated me in my studies.
