December 15 is the priority deadline for admission the following fall. Applicants are encouraged to submit all required materials by that date. Applications received later may be considered if space remains in the selected concentration.

No. The Isenberg PhD Program admits students for the fall semester only.

No. Applicants may apply to only one PhD concentration. Review the nine concentrations and select the one that best matches your research interests and academic goals.

A bachelor's degree or its recognized equivalent is required for admission to the Isenberg PhD Program. A master's degree is generally not required, although applicants are encouraged to have one. Applicants interested in Strategic Management should contact the concentration coordinator to confirm whether an MBA or equivalent degree is required.

No. Applicants from different academic backgrounds are welcome. Strong academic preparation and alignment with faculty research are important; additional preparation may be appropriate depending on the concentration.

Admission is highly competitive. Each concentration typically admits approximately two students per year. Faculty consider academic preparation, test scores, research potential, recommendations, and fit with faculty research interests.

No. Research experience can strengthen an application, but applicants should demonstrate academic preparation, research potential, and an interest in scholarly research.

At least two letters of recommendation are required; three are preferred. Academic references are particularly helpful in evaluating research potential.

Describe your academic preparation, research interests, reasons for pursuing a PhD, and how your interests align with the concentration and its faculty. A finalized dissertation topic is not expected.

Applicants must submit GRE or GMAT scores. Waivers are available only to applicants who have earned a PhD, JD, or MD, subject to Graduate School eligibility requirements. A master’s degree, including an MBA, does not qualify for a waiver.

There is no fixed minimum score that guarantees or rules out admission. Test scores are considered alongside academic preparation, research potential, recommendations, and faculty fit.

The average GMAT score is approximately 690 on the previous GMAT scale (200–800), broadly comparable by percentile to approximately 635–645 on the current GMAT Exam scale (205–805). This is a benchmark, not a minimum or a direct score conversion. GRE scores are also accepted and evaluated in context.

For applicants required to demonstrate English proficiency, the Isenberg PhD TOEFL iBT standard is 5.0 overall and 5.5 in speaking for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. On the previous TOEFL iBT scale, the corresponding standards are 100 overall and above 26 in speaking. For IELTS Academic, the standards are 8.0 overall and 8.0 in speaking. English proficiency scores must remain valid at the time of enrollment.

Applicants may qualify for an exemption under UMass Amherst Graduate School rules based on qualifying prior education or other published criteria. The Graduate School determines eligibility; consult its international applicant guidance.

Unofficial scores may be used for initial review. Applicants recommended for admission must provide official scores as required by the Graduate School.

No. The Isenberg PhD Program does not offer preliminary reviews of CVs, transcripts, test scores, or other application materials. Only completed applications submitted through the UMass Amherst Graduate School are reviewed by the admissions committee.

Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for initial review. Official transcripts are required later as directed by the Graduate School.

Degree certificates generally are not required for initial review, but additional proof of degree completion may be requested.

Applicants may submit a credential evaluation where accepted by the Graduate School. Follow its current instructions for official records and evaluations.

Additional materials may be accepted through the application portal or Graduate Admissions. Submit materials promptly; late updates may not be reviewed.

The UMass Amherst Graduate School lists a nonrefundable $90 application fee. The Isenberg PhD Program does not provide application fee waivers. Applicants seeking a fee waiver should contact the UMass Amherst Graduate School to determine their eligibility.

Faculty review applications within each concentration. Decisions are generally communicated during the spring, but timing varies. Official decisions are issued through the UMass Amherst Graduate School.

No. Applicants should be prepared to describe broad research interests but do not need a finalized dissertation topic.

Yes. The program is primarily designed for careers in academic research and teaching. Students develop research expertise, collaborate with faculty, gain teaching experience, and complete an original dissertation.

Admitted students receive funded assistantships for five academic years and four summers, subject to good academic standing, satisfactory progress, and fulfillment of assistantship responsibilities. Funding includes a stipend and applicable tuition and employee benefits.

No separate funding application is required. Funding is included in the doctoral admissions process, and terms are specified in admission and appointment materials.

The program funding information lists a minimum academic-year stipend of $36,000 for a 20-hour-per-week assistantship and $5,000 in summer support during each of the first four summers. Figures are subject to updates and appointment terms.

Yes. Funded students fulfill assigned research and/or teaching responsibilities.

Yes. Under requirements effective Fall 2026, students must teach four courses as primary instructor during their doctoral studies.

The program is structured around five years of full-time study, including coursework, comprehensive examinations, research, teaching, and the dissertation. Individual completion times vary.

No. The Isenberg PhD is a full-time, campus-based program.

Eligible students in good standing may receive travel support to present research at preapproved conferences, subject to program rules and available allocations.
