Nick Bedoya is a senior double majoring in accounting and sport management. He hails from Merrick, NY, and expects to graduate in May 2026. He credits Isenberg for providing him with many great opportunities, both inside and outside of the classroom.
I first became interested in Isenberg and UMass Amherst because I saw the great business school rankings and of course, the number one campus food. I knew Isenberg was the right fit for me once I stepped foot into the Business Innovation Hub. Seeing how modern and full of energy it was, I could immediately picture myself spending the next four years here.
I chose the combination of accounting and sport management because I have always had a deep curiosity and passion for working in the sports business realm. I found that combining these two majors, specifically in Isenberg, gave me the best foundation to achieve my goals. The accounting program has allowed me to develop fundamental technical business skills while putting me on track to obtain my CPA, while the sport management program has done a great job of providing me with an in-depth look at the current and future state of sports business. Through both majors, I’ve been able to connect with a lot of amazing professionals currently working in my fields of interest.
Two of my favorite classes at Isenberg have been Sports Leadership and Financial Accounting. Despite the significant differences in course content, they were both very engaging, which created a great learning atmosphere. One of my favorite experiences at Isenberg was participating in the service trip to South Africa. Traveling alongside my Isenberg peers and supporting local foundations and conservation efforts gave me a unique perspective on leadership, cultural differences, and the importance of community impact.
I am a member of the accounting society Beta Alpha Psi, where I participate in a variety of events ranging from community service to professional development. I am also involved in the McCormack Sports Analytics Club, where I learn and apply the latest analytical trends in the sports industry. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing in the UMass intramural sports league with friends.
I have had a wide variety of internships and jobs throughout my time at UMass, all of which have been invaluable to my personal and professional development. This past summer, I worked at KPMG as an audit intern, gaining hands-on experience in public accounting auditing large banking clients. Within Isenberg, I currently serve as a lead ambassador for the Undergraduate Programs Office and have previously worked as a teaching assistant for the Non-Profit Marketing course. Outside of the business school, I’ve worked with the UMass football team, interned at a smaller CPA tax firm, and served as a strategic associate for a football analytics and research company. Together, these roles have contributed to my growth in unique ways and helped shape my goal of building a career in the business world of sports.
I plan on moving to New York City, working as an audit associate for KPMG, and obtaining my CPA license.
I would tell my first-year self to do the hard things. Don’t say “not now” or listen to the voice of fear; instead, take on challenges. This will lead to some amazing opportunities and a truly unforgettable time at UMass.
Many people in the Isenberg community have mentored me and made my experience truly memorable, including alumni, professors, and fellow students. One person who has had a particularly meaningful impact is Professor Bradley Bennett. From my very first day on campus, he has been someone I could rely on. Whether I had a question about academics, needed career guidance, or simply wanted to talk about life, he was always willing to make time to listen and offer thoughtful support.
