Leslie Sanchez is a sophomore accounting major at Isenberg set to graduate in spring 2027. Originally from the Dominican Republic, she now resides in Massachusetts. In addition to her major in accounting, she has also declared a secondary major in public health, a unique combination that she’s excited to utilize both as a student and after graduation.
How did you choose Isenberg and UMass Amherst?
When I was applying to college, I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do yet, but I knew that I was interested in business. My sister was already at Isenberg, and she would always tell me how much she loved it and how many opportunities it offered her. Hearing her positive experiences made me feel more confident about applying. I ended up deciding to come here as an undecided major, and I’m really glad I did.
How did you choose this combination of majors?
Last semester, I declared my major in accounting at Isenberg, and while I was happy with it, I felt like something was missing, like I could be doing more. Before college, I attended a technical high school where I studied medical assisting, so I have a strong background in healthcare and have always had an interest in that field too. I started thinking about how I could bring both of my interests together, and that led me to declare public health as my secondary major this semester.
What have been your favorite classes and experiences at Isenberg so far?
Two of my favorite classes at Isenberg have been Introduction to Law and Introduction to Accounting. I really enjoyed both classes, not only because of the material, but also because the professors were so passionate about what they were teaching. Their energy and enthusiasm made the classes even more engaging and memorable for me. Another thing I really love about Isenberg is how easy it is to make new friends and connect with people. Everyone is so welcoming, kind, and always willing to help, which has made my experience here even better.
Have you had any jobs or internships during college?
I work at the Office of Access, Collaboration, and Engagement for Success (ACES) here at Isenberg as an office assistant. In my role, I help support various programs, including managing the Professional Wardrobe Closet, which provides students with free professional clothing. It’s been a great experience because I’ve been able to connect with many students who I might not have met otherwise.
What are you planning after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to pursue a career that combines my backgrounds in accounting and public health. I’m excited about the idea of working in areas like healthcare consulting, hospital finance, or public health administration, where I can use both of my majors to make a meaningful impact.
If you could go back and give your first-year self some advice, what would you tell them?
I would tell myself to make as many friends as possible and take the time to get to know the people around me. It’s easy to stick with one group, but I would encourage myself to expand my network, be open to new connections, and be approachable. Building relationships early on can really help both socially and professionally throughout college.
