This October, Isenberg School of Management students interested in finance careers embarked on a journey to explore top firms in New York City. Organized by the Office of Career Success (OCS), the NYC Finance Trek gave 25 Isenberg students a closer look at the finance sector when they visted some of the industry’s leading companies—including BNP Paribas, Crescent Capital, and Primary Wave—to build connections that could shape their future careers.
Forging a Path to Opportunity
Students on the NYC Trek met finance sector workers in diverse roles and following a range of career trajectories. Through interactions with employees and alumni, students not only learned about potential roles but also forged connections that can help them in their future job searches. The trek brought together students from various backgrounds and programs to create a support network of peers with a shared interest in pursuing finance.
Firsthand Exposure to Professional Environments
The affordability of the NYC Trek was made possible through the generosity of the Student Career Success Fund, which subsidized the Trek—so students only paid a discounted fee of $75. This fee included essential expenses like food, transportation, and hotel accommodations—allowing students from various backgrounds to participate and maximize their exposure to opportunity without the worry of financial strain.
Like the many other students in attendance, Suzanne Patti ’26 took a wealth of information from the trip: “Participating in the finance trek was an eye-opening experience that gave me a firsthand look into the day-to-day life at different finance companies in New York City. This experience allowed me to make real-world connections with professionals and peers who share my passion for career success. Being a part of the trek gave me not only career insights but also lasting relationships with my peers who share similar passions.”
Looking Ahead
The success of the 2024 OCS New York City Trek underscores the importance of initiatives like the Student Career Success Fund in supporting career development activities. Holly Lawrence, assistant dean of the OCS, emphasized the importance of the Student Career Success Fund. “We are so thankful for the generous support of our alumni and employer partners,” she said. “Because of their support, we can allow students to visit companies and learn first-hand about the industry and the real work that’s happening there.” With the high demand and enthusiastic response from students, the OCS anticipates continued growth in the Trek program, said Lawrence. “Treks—like the one to NYC—are a huge gift to our students,” she said.
