McCormack Announces Tokio-Marine HCC Summer Internship Scholarship Winners

Five deserving McCormack Department of Sport Management students will embark on internships this summer as recipients of the prestigious Tokio-Marine HCC Scholarship Awards.

Founded by sport management alumnus Bill Hubbard, in conjunction with Tokio-Marine HCC, the scholarship program provides $5,000 to each recipient. In addition to supporting students with expenses of their internships, the award program seeks to make students more aware of the significance and impact of risk management, risk transfer, and promotion insurance within the sport and entertainment industry, as well as of the career opportunities within this critical and growing segment of the industry.

“Internships are a crucial part of our students’ learning experience and resume building as they prepare for full-time jobs within the sport and entertainment industry,” said Steve McKelvey, chair of the McCormack Department of Sport Management. “The opportunity to receive substantial financial awards, though Bill Hubbard’s generous gift, further encourages and incentivizes our students to pursue summer internships that they might not otherwise be able to pursue.” 

This year’s Tokio-Marine HCC Award winners are:
 

• Kamraan Moore, a rising senior from Herndon, VA, interning in CAA’s basketball division
• Yuki Chiang, a senior from Ojai, CA, serving as a marketing intern for Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing (NASCAR)
• Alex DaSilva, a senior from Islip, NY, interning at Prep Baseball Report (PBR)
• Stefano Pacella, graduate student from Italy, interning at Blue United Corporation
• Jack Davis, graduate student from New Jersey, interning in the athletic department at the University of Rhode Island

"When given the opportunity to intern with Michael Jordan's NASCAR 23XI Racing Team, I was over the moon,” said senior Yuki Chiang. “On the morning that I started my internship, I was notified that I was one of the honored recipients of the TMHCC Summer Internship Award. No words can express the weight lifted from my heart. This award means the world to me and provides me the opportunity to give my whole attention to my internship, without the stress of figuring out ways to make extra money to pay for my tuition.”

 

“Going into 2021 I expected that summer internships would take place in a remote office setting and receiving the Tokio Marine HCC Internship Award has motivated me to make the most out of my internship,” said senior Kamraan Moore. “My goal before the start of the academic year is to prioritize nourishing relationships with CAA rather than saving money to cover my expenses as a student. The TMHCC Internship Award has given me the confidence boost and security that I need to solely focus on my internship and make the most out of my opportunity.”

 

 

“The risk management and sport promotion industry is one that only continues to grow, and touches every single segment of the sport and entertainment industry,” said Hubbard, chairman of Tokio-Marine HCC. “For today’s students, there can be financial challenges that can arise especially from unpaid internships. This program not only helps alleviate some of these financial challenges, but also introduces students to our segment of the sport and entertainment industry.”

As part of the educational process, at the conclusion of summer internships the award recipients will be provided the opportunity to present a risk management assessment or proposal to TMHCC executives based on key learnings from their respective internship experiences for the chance to be awarded an additional $5,000.
