“I am absolutely humbled to be Isenberg’s Accounting Alumnus of the Year,” remarks RSM-Boston’s Director of Human Resources, John Micalizzi ’94. “Isenberg and particularly the accounting department is very special to me—there is a real sense of family in this community. It has always made a big place [UMass] small.”

A frequent visitor to campus in his firm’s quest for accounting talent, John considers recruiting at Isenberg a mutually advantageous, two-way street. “Isenberg accounting graduates confer high-quality value. The student population has gotten stronger and stronger.  I’ve always been passionate about Isenberg and its students.  It’s about giving back and helping each other out.”

As a member of RSM-Boston’s leadership team, John helps execute his firm’s strategy around people and culture.  The nation’s fifth largest accounting firm, RSM focuses on the middle market and is a member of the global accounting network, RSM International.

John joined RSM in 2010 when it acquired Caturano and Company, where he was Vice President of Human Capital. John had been at Caturano  since 2007, which he helped grow into New England’s largest regional full-service CPA consulting and wealth management firm.

John’s professional career began with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he spent 14 years, starting as a summer intern from UMass in 1993. Initially he worked as an auditor but later focused on firm talent operations, serving as a recruiting manger, Northeast Region Campus Recruiting Leader, and U.S. Experienced Recruiting Leader.

“Over the years, I’ve gotten to know students from a broad range of colleges and universities,” he remarks. “Isenberg students have always stood out with their authenticity and individualism.”

John is an active member of the Massachusetts Society of CPAs and has served on its Board of Directors.  He sits on Isenberg’s Department of Accounting Advisory Council. He was a founding member and is a current board member of the UMass Club in Boston.  John and his wife, Leah, live in West Newton with his daughter, Olivia, a high-school freshman.

John will be honored at this year’s Annual Accounting Banquet on April 14th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
