This summer I worked for the New Bedford Bay Sox collegiate baseball team as a game day intern. The Bay Sox are in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, (NECBL). I worked in the merchandise area selling team gear. I also helped behind the scenes with miscellaneous tasks, for example I would step in when needed to work in the concession stand or a game on the concourse!
HOW DID YOU FIND THIS OPPORTUNITY?
After attending the Mark H. McCormack career fair last fall semester, I was lucky enough to receive an interview with the General Manager of the New Bedford Bay Sox. After the interview process I had been offered the position in early January! I was so excited to start interning in May.
WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
Working for the Bay Sox has been so rewarding. I learned new skills that can be transferred into both of my majors. As a dual degree candidate in Accounting and Sport Management, I gained most of my experience from working in the merchandise area. I kept track of what I sold during the games and made sure that the register balanced at the end of the night. In completing my internship I learned so much about the fast paced sport industry. It takes a full team to set up before games which I never before noticed as it always ran so smoothly. I worked with so many great interns and we all collaborated to make sure the job was finished flawlessly. I also gained leadership skills and confidence working so closely with the fans. This experience is something I will always take with me as it was my first introduction to the world of sports.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER STUDENTS?
Advice I would give to other students would be to take risks. I was originally scared to go to the career fair, but it opened up all these opportunities I never thought possible! Now I can say that I have interned with a colligate league baseball team. I learned skills I never knew I would need in the sport industry, especially flexibility! I also grew so much this summer while interning with the Bay Sox and I am incredibly thankful for the career fair! If you use all the resources that are provided by Isenberg you will achieve great things!
