WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Going into my senior year I knew I wanted to find an internship that will give me a new set of experiences that I can take with me post graduation. I was very interested in the Lord Jeffery Inn because I’ve stayed there before and I knew they always held different kinds of events throughout the year. Being a hospitality and tourism management major with an interest in events, I knew being a part of the Lord Jeffery team would help me gain a better understanding in the inner and outer workings of the events industry.

HOW DID YOU FIND THIS OPPORTUNITY?

I got the position through a friend of mine who had previously worked there two summers ago. She put me in touch with the sales director who I then contacted my second semester junior year. Since I was abroad I couldn’t meet in person so we scheduled to meet when I returned. Once we met she gave me a general idea of what the internship is going to be and what they’re looking for in an intern. When she told me I got it we planned to stay in touch in late August to figure out a schedule for me to work for the upcoming semester. The internship thus far has exceeded my expectations. The team that I’m working for is wonderful and the organization as whole is incredible.

WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

I’m currently working with the special events manager, assisting her with upcoming weddings. I create Banquet Event Orders using the Delphi system as well as creating wedding packages to prepare for clients. I also prepare any necessary materials for upcoming tradeshows or fairs that the manager is going to. I’ve assisted in marketing the Lord Jefferys job fair and any other types of events that are being held. I’ve also been given the opportunity to shadow client meetings, which has been a great experience. Working at the Lord Jeffery has really given me an insight into the special events industry that I normally wouldn’t get otherwise.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER STUDENTS?

My advice to students that are looking to intern is to network and find a specific interest, even if one is unsure with what they want to do. It’s important to network with peers, friends and faculty because you never know who might be connected to someone or something that is of interest to you. I find that people are always willing to help others find jobs and internships, especially if you have an idea of you want to do oppose to asking someone to find them any internship. Having a specific interest in mind benefits yourself because you can narrow down the type of company you want to work for and what you want to do. Strategically planning how one internship can benefit and further your career is of the utmost importance. My previous internships have been chosen by my interests and how I thought it could benefit myself for the future, which have resulted in me gaining more opportunities in my field.
