Who are you working for and what are you doing?

I am currently interning for The Hanover Insurance Group in Worcester, MA. I am part of their Personal Lines Finance team, working on projects that involve Retention (Renewal of policies), Profit and Loss from a Written Premium (an insurance premium is what the consumer pays to become protected) perspective, and analyzing growth trends throughout the company.

How did you find this opportunity?

I found this opportunity freshmen year at the Isenberg Career Fair. Being from Worcester I kept the flyer I was given, and at the end of my sophomore year I actually found it cleaning out my folders and decided to apply. I saw it many times on Isenberg Experience (now under its new name of IsenbergWorks) but was nervous to apply because it was looking for juniors and seniors.

What has your experience been like and what have you learned?

My experience has been phenomenal. The people are great, I am always busy, and I am not just getting coffees. One project I worked on actually went to the CFO of the company, and another was sent out to Regional Vice Presidents across the Midwest. The work here is meaningful, and the soft skills you learn are fantastic. I thought I was a wizard at excel, but I was barely proficient compared to my coworkers.

What advice do you have for other students?

There is always more to learn. Like my above excel example, I really thought I knew what I was doing but there were things that I wasn’t taught at school. Using these tools everyday makes you become and expert. It’s like a sport or instrument, the more you practice the better you get at it. Also, don’t be scared to ask questions, your manager, boss, or even professor is there to teach you.
