Influencing others and proving yourself as a leader is an important skill to have. When you’re in the workplace, your employer wants to know that you’ll be able to take initiative in projects and not get lost in the crowd. Being a leader doesn’t necessarily mean being the President or VP of a club: it can mean simply taking initiative on a group project and then using that experience to grow as a person and leader.
Communication in any industry is key. Everyone needs to be able to speak with someone else appropriately and be able to carry a coherent conversation. If you work on a project, you have to be able to communicate. If you have a problem at your internship or job, you have to be able to communicate. Keeping everyone on track by using proper communication can save a lot of time and energy on issues that can easily be resolved.
Being able to wear many hats and having many skills can make you a valuable candidate for a company. If you have skills that other people don’t have such as Photoshop or programming language experience, you are looked at as someone who could be useful in many different aspects of a company. Being versatile can land you that internship or job that you’ve been waiting for!
Have a mind for business! You can enhance this skill by reading books, keeping up with business news via the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Businessweek, and being involved in riveting conversations with your peers.
Negotiation skills are great to have because they will allow you to be able to reach agreements with business partners and individuals. It’s helpful to be able to see different points of view for different situations and then be able to carry out a plan of action based on your negotiations with others.
