Isenberg Undergraduate Advising Response to COVID-19
While the Isenberg Undergraduate Programs physical location is closed, the academic advising team is working virtually and will be providing advising services through various means including email, phone, and zoom meetings.
Although the office will be answering the phone, the expected high volume will mean that it is much easier to submit questions electronically. As we approach the busiest part of the semester for our office, the academic advising team will be periodically checking emails and responding to students.
Answers to frequently asked questions are below:
During the Fall 2020 semester, what services will the academic advisors provide to undergraduate students?
Isenberg academic advisors will be responding to Fall 2020 registration questions during the Add/Drop period via an Advising Help Google form. The advisor may schedule a follow up Zoom meeting if they deem it necessary. The link to this form will be in the Isenberg Undergraduate August 2020 Newsletter.
After the Add/Drop period ends, advisors will be available via Zoom for future semester planning meetings.
When does the Add/Drop period end?
September 7th at 11:59pm.
I tried to enroll in an online course for the fall but received the following error message: "You do not have a valid appointment for this session and the open enrollment period has not begun." What do I do?
Check the course details in SPIRE to make sure you are choosing the appropriate “Session” for your program. Most full-time undergraduate students are University Session students. You may filter for “Session” when doing a SPIRE search to find University Session courses only. For more information on the different Sessions offered at UMass, visit: https://www.umass.edu/it/spire/tooltips/session.html
If you are a University Session student (not enrolled in a UWW/CPE program) and you would like to enroll in a University Without Walls/Continuing and Professional Education (UWW/CPE) Session course, you will need to request to enroll via the following enrollment form: https://www.umass.edu/online/form/campus-fall-spring. UWW class charges are NOT included in University Fall/Spring tuition/fees.
Can an Isenberg Advisor add me into a full Isenberg core course on SPIRE?
At this time, Isenberg advisors will not be able to add students to full courses. Please continue to monitor SPIRE for a seat to become available. You should have a back-up course in mind to complete your schedule.
Do I need to speak to an advisor to change my schedule?
What academic support will be available for my remote classes?
All of the Learning Resource Center’s academic support options will be offered online. Students will have the option of tutoring by appointment online as well as drop-in tutoring online for quick, in-the-moment questions. Students can also attend virtual supplemental instruction (SI) sessions online. Virtual SI sessions will also be available via cloud recordings so students can watch them on their own schedule if they can't attend the virtual sessions. Student success study skills and time management workshops will be offered throughout the semester via Zoom and other online platforms.
What should I do if I have questions concerning non-fall 2020 registration?
You may call the office at 413.545.5610 or email your question to email@example.com (please include your name and UMass Student ID in the email).
If you want to discuss future semester planning with an advisor, please wait until after the Add/Drop period has ended to schedule an appointment with an Isenberg advisor.
I’m not an Isenberg student but wish to apply, can I speak with an Isenberg academic advisor?
During this period the advisors will be working with current Isenberg students. We therefore recommend that on-campus students looking to change their major to an Isenberg major speak with their current academic advisor or submit an email question to firstname.lastname@example.org (include your name and UMass student ID in the email).
I am considering taking courses at another institution, how can I obtain prior approval for these?
For non-Isenberg requirements, you may contact the University’s Registrar’s Office at 413.545.0555. For the Isenberg requirements, you may email us at email@example.com (include your name and UMass student ID in the email). Be certain to list the name of the institution you plan to take the course, the course name and number and a link to a course description.
The Academic Advising team is committed to your success. During this period, we are all experiencing new items and are doing the best we can to offer you a quality experience. Do your best to relax and know that your concerns are important to us.
