Pam Batalis (MS 1992) has been honored by SportsBusiness Journal as one of 35 women across the sports industry for its annual Game Changers Award. Since 2011, Game Changers recognizes women in the industry who have broad, deep and varied responsibilities and who are contributing to the success of the industry in multiple ways. Batalis and the other award winners will be featured in the Sept. 12 issue of SportsBusiness Journal, and celebrated on Sept. 15, in New York at the annual Game Changers: Women in Sports Business conference.

Three decades ago, Isenberg accounting graduate Larry Mestel ’84 took a quantum business leap. It was 1989, and Mestel was Arthur Young’s (a Big Six accounting firm) point man for its client, Polygram Records, during its acquisition of Island Records. Toward the end of negotiations, Mestel received a phone call from Island’s top business officer, Mel Kline.
Samalid M. Hogan has been appointed director of the western regional office of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center (MSBDC) Network. Hogan brings a broad range of experience to the new post, including 12 years in economic development and project management. Most recently, she was the consulting project manager for the Holyoke Innovation District on behalf of the MassTech Collaborative and Pioneer Valley Planning Commission. Previously, she was the senior project manager and brownfields coordinator at the City of Springfield’s Office of Planning and Economic Development.

WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING?During my last semester at UMass, I decided to do something different and try doing an internship during the school year. This is my fifth official internship and I have worked for various companies in the past, including a F500 technology company. I’m currently working for a cloud cybersecurity startup called CloudLock based in Waltham, MA. CloudLock is VC funded, and operates as a cloud access security broker (CASB). A CASB specializes in creating security software for cloud based applications, like Google Apps & Drive, SalesForce, Office 365, ServiceNow, Box, DropBox, and many more.

Visa sport marketing executive Zaileen Janmohamed recently became the ninth McCormack Sport Management alum to receive SportsBusiness Journal’s highly-coveted Forty-Under-40 Award. No other sport management program boasts of more recipients of the Forty-Under-40 Awards, a program initiated in 1999 to identify and honor the most promising young executives in sports business under the age of 40.

“No matter where we go, no matter what we do, we carry the Isenberg brand with us,” Senior Class Speaker Stephanie Berenson ’16 told an audience of over 4000—graduating seniors, their families, and Isenberg faculty and staff—at Isenberg’s Senior Celebration at the Mullins Center on May 7. “We are part of each other. We are each other’s network, and one day, as graduates, we will be a resource for Isenberg students just as alumni have been for us,” emphasized the dual marketing/journalism major.

“Real founders are driven by purpose,” remarks entrepreneur and angel investor Wayne Chang. “All the other [motives], including the money itself, are waste products,” adds Wayne, who excelled as keynote speaker and received an honorary doctorate in business at UMass Amherst’s Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 6.
