MIT finance professor Robert C. Merton—a 1997 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics—headlined an ambitious CSIDM Annual Research conference program devoted to diverse aspects of digitally enabled financial innovation, including cryptocurrencies, algorithmic trading, and other advances on the financial landscape. Attended by a packed house of 125 academics and practitioners, the daylong event took place at Boston’s Aloft Boston Seaport Hotel.

Careers in Accounting and Management Professions program, C.A.M.P. features business-focused talks, workshops, skill-building activities, and field trips. The idea behind the successful initiative, notes Isenberg Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs Melvin Rodriguez, is to motivate minority high-schoolers to pursue collegiate majors, and ultimately careers, in accounting and other business areas.
Moderated by David O’Leary ’81 MBA, the panel discussion on August 30 at the elegant UMass Club on Beacon Hill in Boston was the culminating event at the annual David C. O’Leary MBA Orientation Program. The three-day retreat for Isenberg’s 42 first-year full-time MBA students offered workshops and discussions devoted to team building, personality management, improvisatory skills, behavioral interviewing, and other career building skills. The immersive gatherings also included three days of social and networking opportunities with fellow MBA students and Isenberg alumni.
The McCormack Center recently completed another successful Summer Sport Leadership academy, a two-week Pre-College program in its fifth year featuring educational workshops, site visits, and leadership training for dozens of driven high school students.
The 5th Annual Isenberg Business Leadership Awards & Dinner was held on June 15 at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. This year Isenberg recognized Earl Stafford, CEO of the Stafford Foundation as the Honoree, and Nick Markey, Audit Senior at Deloitte as the Recent Alumni Awardee. The gathering hosted over 300 alumni and friends of Isenberg and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Celebrating Student Entrepreneurship. ElectroPure, a student team and developer of a water treatment/purification device for homes, schools, and other small-scale water systems, took first-place honors in the finals of the 2017 Innovation Challenge business plan competition on April 6th.

“Leadership is a state of mind. Take responsibility—you don’t need a title,” urged keynote speaker Karyn Schoenbart ’78 at Isenberg’s annual student-run Women of Isenberg Conference, on February 25. The UMass alumna is President and Chief Operating Officer of The NPD Group, a top 25 marketing research company, based in Port Washington, New York. “[After graduation] you’ll be the youngest person in the room,” she told Isenberg students in the well-attended gathering of 350. “Age doesn’t matter. Get over it.”

The Spring 2017 Boston Isenberg Alumni Night brought out over 170 alums, faculty and friends of Isenberg to the Top of the Hub—our highest attendance for an alumni night yet. Dean Fuller spoke about the new Business Innovation Hub, and alums also heard from Finance Professor Robert Feingold and MBA Associate Dean John Wells on recent news in both departments.
