More than 250 alumni, students, faculty, and friends from the industry attended the HTM Annual Awards Dinner in Boston, which was preceded by an hour of convivial networking. Alumni represented every age group in the program’s history and every subsector in the hospitality industry.
Laurie Stroll ’83 went from a single mother in college to the President and Owner of Newport Hospitality and she cites the strong network she built through UMass and the Isenberg HTM program as one of the keys to her success.
The third annual Women of Isenberg Conference took place on February 28th in the UMass Amherst Campus Center. Put on by student organization Isenberg Women in Business, the event attracted 310 attendees and offered a full day of speakers, panel discussions, and networking
The annual Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) Career Day on March 2nd attracted 300 students and 68 companies. Dressed in their finest business attire, students attended the networking event with hopes of meeting potential employers. That included scheduled interviews with recruiters the next day.

The UMass chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) received honors at this year's national conference in Washington, D.C., including Chapter Presidents of the Year and Best Publicity Award.
The campus-wide Innovation Challenge business plan competition's new seed pitch component is propelling student teams, through mentoring, workshops, and targeted financial seeding. “We introduced the new phase to elevate and accelerate the larger event’s already high level of competition," notes Isenberg professor William Wooldridge, executive director of Isenberg's Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, which coordinates the Challenge.
HTM’s annual NYC Reception on November 12th at the InterContinental New York Times Square Hotel attracted an enthusiastic gathering of alumni, students, faculty, and industry leaders. Ashley Goodhue '08 was honored with alumni award for her work at her successful start-up Ashley G. Productions.
Five alumni set the record straight in a panel discussion about careers in sales. In technology industries, sales have evolved to a partnership with clients that calls for strong listening and problem-solving skills. "They turn to us as a trusted advisor," said one of the panelists.
An HTM alumni panel offered career development advice and insights to freshmen and transfer students at the 14th annual HTM Welcome Reception for New Students. The panelists underscored the importance of internships and other experiential learning, personal adaptability, and networking.
“When you represent us on the road, you’re a team of one. You’re not only representing us but also the brand that is our client,” observed John Roberto, a veteran practice leader with LRA by Deloitte, the company’s brand protection and customer experience measurement unit. Roberto and Deloitte recruiter Tara Berwick met with Isenberg hospitality students on October 7th to describe the unit’s services and employment opportunities.

In a visit to Isenberg, Pat Whelan '80, described an innovative career in big-picture real estate, including 25+ years of executive management with investments and operations in large public and private and companies. Whelan's current market involves preowned rental homes. He's also been a top executive with an apartment REIT, a real estate media and technology firm, and a company with extensive recreational, residential, and golf community assets.

During her day-long visit to Isenberg, HTM graduate Victoria Vega ’88, a division vice president with the food and dining management firm Unidine, explored human resources and food management issues, in the classroom. In a schoolwide presentation, she shared insights in and personal stories devoted to crisis management.
More than 300 alumni attended the third annual Isenberg Business Leadership Awards gathering on June 17. The event, at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston, was proof positive of Isenberg’s increasingly influential footprint in Greater Boston and beyond.

Manhattan-based entrepreneur, realtor, and developer David Gaunt '70 MBA recalled the early years of his real estate career in New York City. The Isenberg graduate explained how he combined creative problem solving and persistence to gain traction in the market.

Scores of Isenberg students were honored with substantial scholarship assistance at the annual Isenberg Scholarship Celebration, on April 21. The principal speakers—Vinnie Daboul ’87 and Marty Boyle ’15—praised Isenberg as an engine of opportunity and upward mobility. They urged alumni and students to support the school financially and through personal engagement.
Hospitality & Tourism Management’s annual Awards Dinner, at the Boston Harbor Hotel, honored alumnus Robert McCarthy ’78, MGM Resorts Chairman James Murren, and HTM student Vimbai Moyo ’16. The event and its honorees celebrated the program’s values of personal resilience, continuous improvement, and hard work.
Student-driven ideas will be the focus at HackUMass at UMass Amherst’s Integrative Learning Center on April 11-12. More than 600 participants, including 70 companies and students from across the region, will take part in the event, which is the Pioneer Valley’s largest hackathon and is hosted by the Isenberg-based Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship.
