Neil Longley
Associate Professor
Biography:
Dr. Neil Longley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sport Management in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Longley’s primary academic interests are in the areas of sports economics and sports finance. He has published sports-related articles in such journals as The Social Science Journal, American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Law and Business Review of the Americas, Journal of Sports Economics, and Canadian Public Policy.
His research on discrimination in the National Hockey League has been particularly influential. His article “Salary Discrimination in the National Hockey League: The Effects of Team Location”, originally published in the journal Canadian Public Policy, was reprinted in the International Library of Critical Writings in Economics: The Economics of Sport – a book that reprints the most important articles in the field of sports economics over the past 50 years. Most recently, Dr. Longley has written a chapter for the book International Sports Economics Comparisons. The book is a collection of articles from leading sports economists around the world that compares and contrasts the sports industry across various countries.
Dr. Longley also has an extensive publication record outside the sports area, particularly in the areas of investment finance, public policy analysis, and international trade policy. He has published in such journals as Columbia Journal of World Business, Canadian Investment Review, Contemporary Economic Policy, International Journal of Public Administration, Canadian Public Policy, Public Choice, Journal of World Trade, and Law and Policy in International Business.
During the past nine years, Dr. Longley has been teaching finance and public policy analysis at the University of Regina (Canada). During his career, Dr. Longley has also done considerable consulting work – particularly in the areas of market impact studies and cost/benefit analyses – for clients in both the private and public sectors.
Dr. Longley holds a B. Administration and an MA in Economics from the University of Regina, an MBA from the University of Manitoba, and a PhD in Economics from Washington State University.
