Carol A. Barr

Associate Professor, Associate Department Head

Professorship Information

Dr. Carol A. Barr is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She received her B.S. in Athletic Administration from the University of Iowa, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Barr teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of College Athletics, Event Sponsorship, Event Management, and Organizational Behavior and Development.

Dr. Barr is co-editor of Principles and Practice of Sport Management, a textbook used by sport management students across the country. Dr. Barr's research interests and areas of specialization include management issues within collegiate athletics, and gender equity. She has published articles in the Journal of Sport Management, Sport Marketing Quarterly, Journal of Higher Education, and International Sports Journal. Dr. Barr also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Sport Management, and is currently Digest Editor for JSM. In addition, Dr. Barr has published close to forty articles for sport practitioners in publications such as Athletic Business and SportsBusiness Journal.

Dr. Barr has presented papers at numerous conferences and general meetings including the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), The Society for the Study of Legal Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity (SSLASPA), and the European Association for Sport Management (EASM). Dr. Barr has performed consulting work with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and continues to consult with collegiate and scholastic athletic departments and organizations on Title IX regulations and compliance issues.

Dr. Barr has served as Director of National Teams for the United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA), and as a member of the USFHA's Events Committee and Corporate Involvement Committee. Dr. Barr was recently elected as President of the North American Society for Sport Management, and is currently Co-Chair of the University of Massachusetts Amherst Faculty Athletic Council.

Associate Professor 9/00 - Present Department of Sport Studies, University of Massachusetts Amherst Professor for Sport Management undergraduate and graduate courses including Organizational Behavior & Development, College Athletics, Sport Event Sponsorship, and Sport Event Management.

Assistant Professor 9/94 - 8/00 Department of Sport Studies, University of Massachusetts Amherst Professor for Sport Management undergraduate and graduate courses including The Sport Enterprise, College Athletics, Sport Management Policy, and Sport Event Management.

Assistant Athletic Director 9/92 - 5/93 Athletic Department, University of Massachusetts Amherst Athletic department liaison responsible for coordinating athletic department's involvement and activities surrounding the Mullins Center, a new multi-purpose arena. Responsibilities included overseeing the athletic equipment and furnishings budget, policy decisions surrounding usage of the building, and game management activities. Assisted with fiscal year budget preparation for 26 sport programs. Supervised implementation of and administrator in charge of three varsity sport programs. Participated in staff searches for athletic administrative and coaching positions.

Instructor 1/91 - 5/94 Department of Sport Studies, University of Massachusetts Amherst Instructor for Sport Management undergraduate courses. Selected text, designed syllabi, devised course content and assignments, and graded assignments.

Director of National Teams/ 8/83 - 8/89 Program Director United States Field Hockey Association Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado Coordinator of the Elite Player Program which included the U.S. National Team, National Reserve Team, and Junior National Team. Responsible for budgeting, financial decisions, organization of international and national tours, elite athlete and coach selections, and long-term program planning.
