In 2003, students in the Sport Event Management class began to market and manage SoccerFest, a grassroots community-oriented soccer festival. The initial concept for this event came from UMass head men's soccer coach Sam Koch and Dr. Carol Barr. It is currently under the direction of Dr. Mark McDonald, who has expanded the impact of SoccerFest on the Pioneer Valley community and beyond. Through a partnership with the Amherst Youth Soccer Association (AYSA), every child who plays recreational soccer in the Town of Amherst is automatically enrolled in the SoccerFest event. This results into over 500 children participating in this event, visiting the UMass campus and interacting with students and campus leaders in a fun interactive event. Additionally, this is an opportunity for our department to utilize our event management skills and resources to reach out and provide a tangible benefit to the Amherst community. SoccerFest is usually held in the beginning of May and incorporate all of the student's class work throughout the semester.
