Isenberg School Researchers Help Food Bank with Supply Chain Management
November 12, 2009

During a nine-month project, operations management professor Senay Solak and MBA candidate Justin Fisher assessed the efficiency and equity of food distribution to 191 agencies by the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. Using supply chain modeling techniques, the researchers presented the Food Bank with pragmatic distribution alternatives.

On October 13, the UMass Amherst student chapter of INFORMS (Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences) will be honored by its parent society with a Summa Cum Laude Award. At the same awards ceremony, INFORMS will present the annual Judith Liebman Award to recently graduated Isenberg Ph.D. student Qiang Patrick Qiang. The world's largest society for professionals in operations management, INFORMS has dozens of student chapters, including those at UMass, Stanford, UCal Berkeley, Michigan, MIT, Princeton, and Virginia Tech.

Isenberg School finance professor Mila Getmansky Sherman has shown that during financial crises that affect hedge funds, nonclassical idiosyncratic risk factors may be at work. The Isenberg researcher found that two crises--the global financial crisis of 2008 and the crisis in 1998--had "latent" risk exposures that could not be captured by the market, and risks to liquidity, credit, and volatility alone.
