New Jack Welch Scholars at the Isenberg School
October 5, 2009
In September, the Isenberg School welcomed its newest Jack Welch Scholars, freshmen Kathleen (Katie) Murphy '13 and Brandon Auger '13. Created by the GE Fund to honor former GE chairman and UMass Amherst alumnus John F. Welch '57, the highly competitive scholarships provide full financial support for their recipients throughout their undergraduate years. Welch scholars are chosen for their academic achievements, social responsibility, and leadership potential demonstrated during their high school years. The scholarships are earmarked for students in the Isenberg School and the College of Engineering.
A graduate of Central High School in North Andover, Katie Murphy was a National Honors Society student who tutored fellow students, coordinated school-related social and recreational events, and excelled in math league and track. At Shrewsbury High School, National Honors Society student Brandon Auger tutored elementary and high-school students, participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and was a member of the YMCA Leaders Club.
Katie and John are the seventh and eighth Isenberg School students to receive Welch scholarships. Three have graduated; six others (including Katie and John) are progressing toward their B.B.A. degrees.
More information about the Jack Welch Scholars can be found in the Isenberg 2008 Annual Report.
