HTM Master of Science Degree Requirements

  • Candidates must complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate-level course work, with 24 to 30 credits taken in the HTM Department
  • 6 to 12 credits may be taken in other departments, such as Marketing, Management, Finance and Operations Management, Sport Studies, or Education.

Foundation

Students should have a basic foundation in business administration before enrolling in core courses. Specifically, they need to have basic competencies in computer spreadsheets and word processing and a basic foundation in marketing, accounting, finance, economics, and statistics. If deficiencies in one or more areas exist, students will be directed toward the appropriate course(s) on campus. These courses must be completed in addition to the stated requirements of the thesis and non-thesis tracks. Also, any student without an undergraduate hospitality degree must take a departmental seminar course to gain a basic understanding of the hospitality and tourism industries.

Tracks

Thesis track
Requirements include 18 credits of upper-level HTM courses, 12 credits of specialty courses to be chosen in consultation with an adviser, and 6 credits for the thesis.

Non-thesis track
Requirements include 18 credits of upper-level HTM courses and 15 credits of specialty courses, plus 3 credits for the industry research project.

Students with undergraduate degrees in most hospitality or business-related majors normally have fulfilled all of the general business foundation requirements before entering the program.
