Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How can I get information and application materials on the dual degree program?
A. Send your name and full address to htm@ht.umass.edu. You will receive information from both the UMass Graduate School and the HTM Department. Or click here for online access to the application.
Q. When is the application deadline?
A. February 1. Applications will be accepted beyond the deadlines only as positions are available. Students applying to the MS/MBA Dual Degree Program are admitted in the fall only.
Q. What are the minimum scores for the GMAT and TOEFL exams?
A. While we do not set specific minimums within the department, most of the GMAT scores are around 620, ideally with a balance between the verbal and quantitative portions of the test. The Graduate School requires a minimum of 550 on the TOEFL, and most of our students achieve a score of at least 600.
Q. How long will it take to complete the dual HTM MS/MBA degree?
A. The dual degree curriculum is designed as an accelerated two-year program, but may take an extra summer or fall semester to complete all requirements.
Q. What kind of job can I expect to get upon graduation?
A. Most of our graduates accept hotel or food service management positions with large corporations in the Boston and New York areas. Some students take hospitality-related positions in management consulting firms. Other students return to their home countries to positions with large hospitality firms or tourism agencies. Still others go on to Ph.D. programs in hospitality or business toward the goal of university teaching positions.
Q. Can I apply for financial aid?
A. All applicant are automatically considered for TA positions, and international students are also considered for tution waivers.
Q. When are admission decisions made?
A. Admission decisions are made late March.
Q. Is it possible for me to contact a current graduate student about his or her experiences with the program?
A. Yes. Our current graduate students come from many walks of life, countries, and work experiences. Referrals can be made by the faculty advisor.
Q. Can I enroll in the HTM program and add the MBA option later?
A. No, the programs are concurrent and admission to both individual programs the same year is required. Students are admitted with a cohort group and remain with that group throughout the program. The dual degree program is a carefully sequenced set of courses and begins with a series of MBA courses. Hence, students already enrolled in the HTM M.S. degree program are not eligible to apply for the MS/MBA Dual Degree.
Q. What if I have additional questions about the program?
A. Contact the Graduate Program Director, Dr. Atul Sheel, 413-545-4036 or htmgrad@ht.umass.edu.
