Q. How can I get information and application materials?
A. Send your name and full address to htm@ht.umass.edu. You will receive information from both the UMass Graduate School and the HTM Department. Or click here for online access to the application.
Q. When is the application deadline?
A. The deadline for the fall semester is February 1, and for spring, applications are due by October 1. Applications will be accepted beyond the deadlines only as positions are available.
Q. What are the minimum scores for the GMAT and TOEFL exams?
A. While we do not set specific minimums within the department, most of the GMAT scores are around 600, ideally with a balance between the verbal and quantitative portions of the test. The Graduate School requires a minimum of 550 on the TOEFL, and most of our students achieve a score of at least 600.
Q. How long will it take to complete the M.S. degree in HTM?
A. The curriculum is designed as a two-year program, but a few students are able to complete the requirements in three semesters, if their undergraduate degrees are in either hospitality or business.
Q. What kind of job can I expect to get upon graduation?
A. Most of our graduates accept hotel or food service management positions with large corporations in the Boston and New York areas. Some students take hospitality-related positions in management consulting firms. Other students return to their home countries to positions with large hospitality firms or tourism agencies. Still others go on to Ph.D. programs in hospitality or business toward the goal of university teaching positions.
Q. Can I apply for financial aid?
A. All applicant are automatically considered for TA positions, and international students are also considered for tution waivers.
Q. When are admission decisions made?
A. Decisions for fall semester are made late March; decisions for spring are made in late October.
Q. Is it possible for me to contact a current graduate student about his or her experiences with the program?
A. Yes. Our current graduate students come from many walks of life, countries, and work experiences. Referrals can be made by the faculty advisor.
