Academic Advising

Each student entering the HTM Department is assigned a faculty member as an advisor and is strongly urged to consult with him/her regularly. Advisors assist with academic and career planning and help with concerns over graduation requirements. Advisors assist students with a broad spectrum of problems, options, and queries. These include:

* Developing educational goals and objectives,

* Discussing the various careers and career paths available upon graduation,

* Keeping up-to-date with changes in the curriculum and graduation requirements,

* Selecting the most appropriate electives,

* Periodically reviewing progress.

Evaluating Alternatives
For students to benefit most from academic advising, it is essential that they consult their advisors regularly. Advisor assignments can be found on individual degree audits and in student mailboxes. Where possible, advisors are assigned on the basis of the student's selected area of concentration.

This consultation does not relieve the student of the ultimate responsibility for his or own academic decisions. Each student is responsible for reviewing his or her own progress in filling University and Department requirements toward graduation. Advisors will certainly help students with questions or problems, but it is the student's responsibility to address the questions with his/her advisor. The Department's Records Office has a portfolio for each student containing cumulative academic records (grade reports, summer job placement reports, test scores, etc.). Students can review their folders in the presence of the Undergraduate Advisor.

Degree progress reports are available continuously and can be viewed in each student's SPIRE account. This document is a personalized report that shows your progress in meeting graduation requirements. Please review these reports on a regular basis to ensure that you are fully aware of what you have completed and what you still need to complete. Also, if you feel that there are any errors in the report, please report this to the Undergraduate Advisor immediately for resolution.
