A Welcome Note from

Department Head, Professor Haemoon Oh

 

The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst has been historically regarded as one of the oldest and finest hospitality programs.  The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA).  Each year students join us to advance their knowledge and build their exciting career opportunities to become leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry.

 

Our program is part of the Isenberg School of Management and provides our students with excellent opportunities to interact and sharpen their business skills with the first-class peers and faculty.  Business school courses are available to strengthen the foundation of knowledge in our students as well as to offer our students opportunities to double major in applicable business disciplines, such as accounting,  finance and operations management, management, marketing, sport management, and resource economics.  

 

Graduates of UMass HTM are in high demand by hospitality and tourism companies, as evidenced in high placement rates.  Our program has been rated as one of the most favored hospitality programs by companies that are recruiting their future managers and leaders in the field.  Successful graduates and current students are highly recruited for seasonal positions, internships, and permanent positions.

 

Our program boasts more than 7,000 alumni in the New England region and more than 12,000 worldwide.  Our alumni remain connected and involved with the program, as shown by many successful alumni serving on the program's Advisory Board.  They are active around the globe; many return to our classroom to share their real-world experience with our current students. 

 

Students go through our innovative curriculum that offers a balance between academic rigor and practical application.  Our curriculum also provides a broad coverage of multi-dimensional hospitality education including hotel and resort management, restaurant, foodservice, and beverage management, tourism planning, event and club management, and casino management.  Several capstone courses at the senior level are designed to deepen the knowledge and skills of our students for their upcoming industry career.

 

Our program offers students a variety of opportunities to get involved in student activities and departmental events.  We have six student clubs whose members are very active nationally as well as regionally.  Many department events such as the HTM Career Day, Freshmen Breakfast, and Senior Etiquette Dinner are organized based on the strong involvement of our students.  These activity opportunities allow our students to practice while learning and develop strong work experiences and hospitality work ethics. 

 

We strive to provide our students with every possible opportunity to learn globally and build upon experiences that may lead to global management careers.  Students may choose to study in one semester or year at one of our many exchange-partner schools either within the US such as California, Florida, and Nevada or internationally such as Switzerland, England, and Australia.  Every year a number of students also join a short summer study abroad program to experience different cultures while learning.  We will continue to develop more exciting international opportunities for our students to learn and work.

 

UMass HTM also offers a Ph.D. degree program that is jointly sponsored by and highly integrated into the Isenberg School of Management graduate curriculums.  In addition, we offer an online bachelor's degree program and two online certificate programs (event management and casino management) to the needs of people who want to both continue their education and advance their career.
