Fact Sheet
-
Where is the Writing Center?
SOM Room 207, between the Business Communication Program (208) and the Undergraduate office.
-
Who can use the Writing Center?
The Writing Center is for all SOM students, who may receive assistance with writing assignments in all SOM and non-SOM courses. Consultants offer help with the writing and editing process, from brainstorming ideas to punctuation to revision. For students and faculty, the Center contains a small library with business and technical writing manuals and multi-cultural and international articles and books.
-
When is the Writing Center open?
Monday through Friday. Click here for a complete list of hours.
-
Do I need to make an appointment?
No, not usually. The Writing Center operates on a first-come, first-served basis. If, however, the Center gets busy, or if you have a paper longer than 5 pages, we strongly recommended, that you make an appointment for a session. (Appointments take priority over walk-ins.) To make an appointment, contact either the Writing Center at 545-4941 or Gail Cruise at 545-5592, or simply stop by the Center.
-
How long do walk-in sessions last?
Usually about 20 minutes. If more assistance is necessary, you may be asked to schedule an appointment for a follow-up session.
-
What do I need to bring?
Bring your draft and a copy of the assignment and any handouts containing your instructor’s guidelines.
-
What happens during my session?
Consultants assess your paper, ask questions, and point to problem areas or parts that need attention. Our aim is not to "fix" papers and guarantee A’s, but rather to diagnose weaknesses and prescribe methods of addressing these weaknesses. Writers are expected to do their own final proofreading, with one exception:
We offer editing and final proofreading as a professional service to SOM students and faculty who bring in non-graded but critical career documents, such as resumes, cover letters, graduate school essays, and/or scholarship or internship proposals.
