Isenberg Freshmen Spearhead Fundraiser for Marathon Victims

April 19, 2013

One Fun logo and UMass run organizer Chris Weyant.Chris Weyant, a freshman in Isenberg's Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management was the lead organizer of a 2.62 mile run on campus that raised $3,000 for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Fellow Sport Management freshman Ryan Ellington and two other UMass Amherst students helped Weyant attract 1,000 participants for the run on April 18. All funds raised will go to The One Fund Boston, which directly benefits victims of the bombings. The fund's administrator is UMass Amherst alumnus Kenneth Feinberg '67, who ran the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund.

"The idea may have begun with me, but it was the volunteers, [including Sport Management professors Lisa Pike Masteralexis and Todd Crosset] who made it a success," noted Weyant. "Sport Management is known for its service to the community. This event proved that community service plays a role in every major."
