CommonWealth Magazine - Spring 2005

New Edition of a Sport Management Classic-in-the-Making

Book Cover

For a comprehensive contemporary introduction to the sport management field, there is no better survey than the just-published second edition of Principles and Practice of Sport Management (Jones and Bartlett Publishers). Edited by Isenberg School Sport Management Department Head Lisa Pike Masteralexis, Associate Department Head Carol Barr, and University of Louisville Sport Management Professor Mary Hums, the wide-ranging survey introduces and analyzes the sport management profession’s essential issues and practices. After separate chapters that explain the managerial, marketing, financial, legal, and ethical principles of the profession, the book devotes sections to the amateur and professional sport industries and their segments. Subsequent chapters focus on facility and events management, sport sales and sponsorship, sport communications, broadcasting, licensing, and other topics. The book also includes chapters on the health and fitness industry, recreational sport, and a
concluding chapter on career preparation. The book’s nineteen contributors include a diverse roster of academicians and industry specialists. Beside the editor-authors, contributing authors on the Isenberg School’s Sport Management faculty include Todd Crosset, Jay (James) Gladden, William Sutton, Glenn Wong, Mark McDonald, Stephen McKelvey, and Betsy Goff.
