Where should I park?

There are two main parking options – buying a parking pass through the University, or buying a pass to park in the lot belonging to the Baptist Church that is located directly across from the Isenberg School of Management.

Many people prefer the church lot because it is closer than the lots you can get into through the university. However, it is more expensive and passes are sold in person on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tickets don’t go on sale for the church lot until July. The phone number for the church is (413) 549-3596

University parking is discounted through your graduate assistantship. The sooner you contact the university about parking the more likely you will be able to get a parking location closer to Isenberg.

Please note that many students choose to take the bus. Depending on where you live, this can be a very viable option, and it’s free.

How does the bus system work?

The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) runs many different bus routes throughout the Pioneer Valley. Using your UMass ID card, you will have unlimited free access to the PVTA buses. There are several buses that stop at UMass, some very near the Isenberg School of Management. The buses also run to the major grocery stores and shopping mall. For more information on bus stop locations and routes, visit www.pvta.com.

Where can I eat lunch? Can I bring my lunch to campus?

Campus Center

The Newman Center and the Whitmore Administration Cafe offer quick food and beverage options and both are located within a 2 minute walk from the Isenberg School of Management. Other popular choices for dining are the UMass Campus Center as well as downtown Amherst which is only a five minute drive from campus.

In addition, many students choose to bring their lunch to school. The MBA Lounge, which is located on the second floor of the Isenberg School of Management, has a refrigerator and two microwave ovens available for your use.

Where do I sign assistantship paperwork?

Full-time MBA students will be notified by email in August by the Graduate Programs Office when contracts will be available. If at all possible you should sign your contract by the date indicated in the email, this is usually mid to late August in order for you to receive your first paycheck mid September.

Dual degree students will be provided information from their primary degree department with details on signing the necessary paperwork.

In addition to the assistantship contract you will be required to complete an I-9, W-2 and Participation Agreement. You will complete this necessary paperwork at a mandatory new graduate student employee orientation session. There are several designated dates for these sessions, dates will be provided in the email mentioned above.

How much is the stipend I receive for my assistantship? How am I paid?

For the 2007-2008 school year, the stipend was approximately $378, before taxes, paid every two weeks. You are paid through a check from the University. This can be direct-deposited into your bank account, or a check will be issued directly to you. If you don’t choose to have direct deposit, you will pick up your check in the Business Office at the end of each pay period.

What are the fees that are not covered by the assistantship?

For the 2007-2008 school year, the fees not covered by the assistantship were approximately $1,500 per year. If you have Federal loans, and the loan money comes in before you are billed, the fees will be taken out of your loan amounts. If not, you will need to go to the Bursar’s Office (located in Whitmore) and pay the balance on your account.

How soon will I receive my federal financial aid money?

It typically takes a few weeks before the federal aid money is dispersed (Stafford loans, etc). Funds are generally available no sooner than mid-to-late September.

If I didn't receive an assistantship, is there anything I could do to get one?

There is a bulletin board with assistantship postings outside the Graduate Assistantship office in the Goodell Building, Room 517, that you should check daily during your first month of school. Postings are also available online at www.umass.edu/gradschool/assistantship. In addition, sometimes assistantships open up for the spring semester.

What is the schedule of classes?

First year classes are run on a “quarter” system. This means you have three-four classes for the first half of the semester and then begin new classes in late October. Thus, the pace is accelerated and you will be learning a semester’s worth of work in seven to eight weeks.

The day-to-day schedule does not coincide with the overall university schedule. The length of class periods varies from three hours for some classes to an hour and a half for others. You will have some classes every day, and some only a few times per week. You will be given a detailed class schedule during orientation. Plan on being in class for the majority of the day your first semester. The earliest class is scheduled for 8am, but some semesters you will not have class until 9 or 10 am.

Do we have the same holiday schedule as the University?

The MBA classes do follow the university’s holiday schedule. MBAs are typically completely finished on the dates listed as the “last day of classes” because MBA professors usually give their finals during the regular class times. Thus, the final examination periods do not apply to MBAs.

MBA classes are not held during the Winter Session, so we are on holiday break from mid-December until the last week in January.

How, where, and when do I buy textbooks?

Due to the quarter system, you will not be able to buy all of your books for the year at one time. You will buy the books needed for the first quarter at the beginning of the year, and then the books for the remaining quarters at the start of each new quarter. Professors often do not announce their choice of textbooks until several days before their classes begin, so it is not always possible to plan ahead.

You can purchase your text books from a variety of sources. Through the University bookstore (called the Textbook Annex) or through the
Jeffrey Amherst Book Store. It is sometimes possible to purchase books on-line through discount retailers like Amazon, although some professors use specialized texts which cannot be found online. Second year students may also be willing to sell used books for those classes where the professor uses the same textbooks they used in the previous year.

Where can I find details about health and dental insurance coverage?

If you have an assistantship, you will receive health and dental insurance coverage. You will be given information on when and how to complete the registration for this insurance, as well as details about the plans, during orientation. Prescriptions are partially covered by the insurance, and the local pharmacies can access your information before you receive your membership card in the mail.

For more information on the specifics of the health plan, visit the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO) website:

Where do I go to get my UMass ID card?

UCard Logo

UMass ID cards, or “U-Cards” can be obtained at 104 Franklin Dining Hall. There is a nominal fee for this card which must be paid for in cash or with a check. You can put money on this card for use to buy food at Whitmore Cafe, to make copies, to take out library books or to print in the Isenberg School of Management computer lab. The card also gets you free use of the PVTA buses, and discounted movie tickets.

Do I have to have a laptop?

A laptop is not required, and the professors do not expect you to have a computer to use in class. However, you are expected to have access to a computer for homework assignments, to access course websites, etc. If you are looking to buy a laptop, the University Bookstore in the Campus Center is a good place to look. The University Bookstore has access to student discounts from a number of prominent computer manufacturers. The University Bookstore Website

Do I have access to computers and printers in the SOM building?

There is a computer lab in the Isenberg School of Management where you can access the computers using your university logon, and print using your UCard to pay for printing.

Do I have a UMass email account? How are announcements made to the class?

You will have a UMass email account, and you should receive your user name and temporary password in the mail sometime during the summer.

Most email communication to MBA students are made via the “Money List”, a group which can be used by any MBA student. However, some professors choose other methods of communication and share with students at the begining of classes. The "Money List" is used for announcements of many school-related items such as class schedule changes, club events, etc. You will hear more about the Money List and the guidelines for its use during orientation.

How can I access the library resources or check out library books?
