FAQs of Prospective Full-time MBAs
Below are the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) we receive from prospective students. Please feel free to contact the Graduate Programs Office if you have any outstanding questions.
How do I apply and when are the application deadlines?

What is procedure for applying to the dual degree programs?
Only one application needs to be completed and submitted. However, you must be accepted to both programs to enroll in the dual degree program. To learn more about our dual degree programs, please visit here: Dual Degree Programs.
How will I receive an acknowledgement of application once I apply?
All applicants to the MBA Program will receive an Acknowledgement Letter via e-mail from the Graduate Admissions Office which includes your Admissions ID and Access Code. This will enable you to keep track of application materials that have been received. Click here to track the status of your application.
Is there any prerequisite coursework I need to complete before applying?
There is no prerequisite coursework; however, admitted students will be expected to successfully complete any assigned summer coursework in preparation for beginning at Isenberg.
I took classes at a college other than the one from which I graduated from. Do I need to send transcripts from that school with my application?
You must official transcripts from any school at which you took 6 or more credits.
Is there a minimum GMAT score that will be accepted?
There is no "minimum" score requirement. The admissions team views the GMAT score as one piece of information in the context of the full application in their evaluation.
How long should the Personal Essay be?
Personal essays should be brief; approximately to 1-3 pages double spaced.
Who should my recommendations come from?
Recommendations should be requested from individuals know you on a professional level and well enough to provide specific examples and details regarding your past performance and competencies. If you are a recent college graduate we encourage you to provide one academic and one professional reference.
Am I at a disadvantage if I have not completed previous coursework in business?
No, many current students do not have previous coursework in business.
How can I arrange an interview?
If selected to interview, you will be contacted to complete an interview either in person or via Skype. Interviews are typically 30 minutes long.
How will I be notified if accepted?
Acceptance decisions will be emailed by Isenberg MBA admissions. A hard copy follow-up will also be sent. The UMass Graduate School will send an official letter of acceptance in the mail and a follow up email to applicants requiring a electronic "confirmation" of acceptance.
Admissions - International Candidates
Can the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) be waived?
TOEFL's can be waived if candidate (any of the following):
Has citizenship in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, and English-speaking countries Africa or the Caribbean.
Has previously earned a university degree from US or one of the countries listed above.
Holds a degree earned from the American University in Beirut, American University in Bulgaria, American College of Greece.
Holds a degree from Bogazigi University.
Is currently enrolled in a US program & has completed at least 2 years.
The TOEFL can also be waived if the applicant is part of the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or the Fifth Pathway.
What is the minimum TOEFL accepted?
Isenberg requires a minimum score of:
600 for the written examination
250 for the computer-based examination
100 for the internet-based examination
What is the average TOEFL score accepted?
The majority of our applicants submit the internet-based TOEFL scores. The average score each year is typically between 104 - 110.
Can I submit the English for International Opportunity (IELTS) instead of the TOEFL?
Yes, the IELTS (with a minimum score of 8) can be submitted instead of the TOEFL.
I earned an undergraduate degree that only took 3 years. Am I eligible to apply to Isenberg?
You must earn a degree from a 4 year institution or education that is the equivalent to a 4-year degree (in some cases a course-by-course evaluation of academic history may be required).
Are transfer credits accepted?
Yes, a maximum of 6 transfer credits can be accepted.
Are there any special benefits for those in and/or coming from the US Military?
There are a number of benefits and opportunities that Isenberg is proud to extend to those that have served in the US Military. To learn about these please click here.
How long can I defer my acceptance?
Accepted students can defer their acceptance for up to one year with approval of the Associate Dean. Assistantship awards cannot be deferred.
